Shifting fork is a critical internal component within a manual or automated manual transmission, responsible for physically engaging and disengaging gears. Typically made from stamped steel or cast iron, it features prongs that fit into the groove of a synchronizer sleeve or sliding gear. When the driver moves the shift lever, the motion is transferred via shift rails to the fork, which then slides the synchronizer assembly axially. This action locks the selected gear to the output shaft, establishing the desired gear ratio. Its precision and durability are vital for ensuring quick, accurate, and reliable gear changes while preventing accidental disengagement under load.

Material Specifications
Low-Carbon Alloy Steel: SAE 8620 (20CrMnTi), SAE 4120. Suitable for carburizing; offers a tough core and hard surface.
Medium-Carbon Structural Steel: SAE 1045 (45#), SAE 4140. Suitable for induction hardening; lower cost, used for light-duty or commercial applications.
High-Strength Aluminum Alloy: 7075-T6, 6061-T6. Reserved for racing or ultra-lightweight designs (requires hard anodizing or coatings).
Powder Metallurgy (PM): Iron-based PM. Ideal for high-volume, complex shapes, and low-cost passenger car applications; can be oil-impregnated for self-lubrication.
Heat Treatment & Surface Finish
Carburizing & Hardening
Application: Alloy steel forks.
Surface Hardness: 58 – 64 HRC (contact surfaces and fork fingers).
Core Hardness: 30 – 45 HRC (ensures impact toughness).
Effective Case Depth (ECD): 0.6 mm – 1.2 mm (depends on module and load).
Induction Hardening:
Application: Medium-carbon steel forks.
Hardness: 50 – 58 HRC (limited to contact areas).
Characteristics: Minimal distortion, high efficiency, but shallower case depth.
Surface Treatments:
Phosphating: Black or gray phosphate coating to improve initial break-in performance and rust resistance.
